A long
time ago, there lived an old woman named mande rubiah and her son called Malin
Kundang. They lived in a village near Muara Padang Beach, West Sumatra. They
were very poor, but mande rubiah never complained. She loved Malin very much.
They took woods from the forest and sold them to buy food. When Malin was
fifteen years old, he worked as a potter at Muara.
One day
a skipper asked him to work on his ship. Malin told his mother that he liked to
accept the offer to change their life. “Mother, let me go to work, so we can
have a better life. I will come back soon. I promise.” Said Malin Kundang.
Mande Rubiah was very sad but she said, “Of course, my dear. May God bless
you.”
Mali
worked hard on his ship and the skipper liked him. One day the skipper fell
ill. He called Malin and his daughter Nilam Sari. “I think I can’t survive.
Malin, I want you to marry my daughter and I give you all my wealth to you.” He
died and Malin Kundang married Nilam Sari. Malin became rich but he was very
greedy and arrogant. He forgot everything included his mother who had waited
for him nearly ten years.
One day,
his wife really wanted to visit his husband’s mother land. Malin agreed with
her. Their ship anchored at the harbor and everybody heard their coming. “Malin
comes back! Malin comes back! He is rich now!”, they shouted.
Mande Rubiah came to the harbor and said with
Happiness, “Malin my son, welcome to your village. I really miss you.” Malin
kundang ashamed with his wife when he saw his mother in bad clothes. He always
said to his wife that his mother was very rich.
“Who is that dirty old woman, my husband?” asked Nilam
arrogantly.
“I don’t know.” replied Malin.
“I’m your mother Malin. Do’t you remember me?” cried his
mother.
“Go away! I have no mother like you!” shouted Malin.
Mande Rubiah was very sad. Malin Kundang then got on the
ship and sailed. The old woman knelt down. She cried and prayed. “God, show him
your power. My son is sinful.” Then a big storm hit Malin’s ship and a
lightening stinged him, making him burnt and turned him into a stone.
